The old bazaar of Gjirokastër, where the town’s cobbled lanes meet below the castle, is the heart of the UNESCO-listed old town. Its stone shops, many with wooden shutters and stone roofs, sell crafts, carpets, carved wood, embroidery and souvenirs, and cafés and restaurants offer a break with a view. The 16th-century Bazaar Mosque stands at its centre. Come in the early evening, when the light warms the stone and the town comes out to walk.
