Christmas in Tirana: a market on the square, lights in Blloku and New Year’s Eve

Winter in Tirana means a Christmas market on Skanderbeg Square, lights in Blloku and around the New Bazaar, New Year’s Eve with the whole city out, and snow on the mountains.

Updated October 2026

The Christmas market

In recent years, Tirana has held a Christmas market on Skanderbeg Square through December, with wooden chalets, a big Christmas tree, lights, rides for children and plenty of hot food and drink; it feels more like a festive fair than a craft market. Last season it ran from 6 December 2025 to 6 January 2026, with a second market at the New Bazaar and lights in Blloku.

The 2026 programme had not been announced when we checked in October 2026; expect similar dates and check the city’s official channels in late November.

New Year’s Eve

New Year is the biggest celebration of the Albanian winter. The city fills the streets around Skanderbeg Square, families gather for long dinners, and fireworks light up the sky at midnight. Book restaurants well ahead.

Christmas in Albania

Albania is a country of several faiths, and Christmas on 25 December is a public holiday for everyone. Catholic and Orthodox churches hold services, and Tirana’s cathedrals, St Paul’s and the Resurrection, are beautiful on Christmas Eve.

Winter on Dajti and beyond

When snow falls on Mount Dajti, the cable car becomes a winter outing (it closes on Tuesdays and in bad weather). Berat, Gjirokastër and Krujë are quiet and atmospheric in winter. The high mountains around Theth and Valbona are largely closed to visitors in winter, so leave them for summer.

Coming next: Dita e Verës

On 14 March Albanians celebrate Dita e Verës, Summer Day, a public holiday welcoming the end of winter, especially in Elbasan, with ballokume, the traditional butter biscuits.
