The National Iconographic Museum Onufri occupies the Church of the Dormition of St Mary inside Berat castle. It is named after Onufri, the 16th-century archpriest and painter, trained in Venice, who founded a school of icon painting in Berat and brought a touch of the Italian Renaissance to the Orthodox tradition; his famous red, “Onufri red”, glows in the icons. The church also holds a gilded carved iconostasis. Check opening days, which change with the season, and allow an hour.
