Mangalem is the classic Berat view and the reason it is called the town of a thousand windows: white Ottoman houses with rows of windows stacked up the hillside below the castle, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site shared with Gjirokastër since 2008. Wander its steep lanes past the Bachelors’ Mosque and the Lead Mosque, then come down to the riverside promenade for the evening walk, when the whole town is out. The light is loveliest in late afternoon.
