Tirana Mosaic
Tirana’s oldest monument
About Tirana Mosaic
The Tirana Mosaic is the only archaeological monument within the city: the remains of a 3rd-century Roman country house, the villa rustica, over which a Paleo-Christian basilica was built in the 5th and 6th centuries. Discovered in 1972 and declared a cultural monument in 1973, it was reopened to the public in 2010, and a new roof now protects the floors, with geometric patterns, birds and fish. It is a small but rewarding stop, in a residential area west of the centre; combine it with a walk along Rruga e Kavajës.
Why it's on our list
- Roman mosaics
- The only archaeological site in the city
- Under a new roof
