The back story

About Working remotely from Tirana: the back story

More and more remote workers spend weeks or months in Tirana. The city is lively, compact and sociable, and the coast and mountains are close for weekends.

Where to work

Co-working spaces such as Destil Creative Hub and Coolab offer desks, meeting rooms and a community of freelancers and start-ups. Many people also work from cafés, which are relaxed about laptops outside the busiest hours.

Staying longer

Albania is not in the Schengen area, and its visa-free stay is counted separately. Many nationalities can stay visa-free for up to 90 days in 180, and US citizens for up to a year. For longer stays, Albania’s law on foreigners provides residence permits, including one aimed at digital nomads; requirements change, so check with the Albanian authorities or an immigration lawyer.

In Tirana, the café is also the office.

Practicalities

Mobile data is cheap and widely available; buy a local SIM or eSIM with your passport. Blloku and the streets around the Grand Park are popular with longer-stay visitors.

Our advice: try a co-working day pass before committing to a month, work from cafés in the mornings, and check the residence rules for your nationality well before your visa-free days run out.
