Durrës Castle, the fortified old city, is enclosed by walls built in the late 5th century under the Byzantine emperor Anastasius, who was born here, and repaired and strengthened in the Middle Ages. The round Venetian Tower, by the port, is the most striking survivor, and now holds a café-bar with a terrace. Follow the walls on foot from the tower towards the amphitheatre, past the Byzantine forum, for an easy history walk through the town centre.
