Apollonia
An ancient Greek city
About Apollonia
Apollonia, near Fier, was founded around 600 BC by Greek colonists from Corinth and became one of the great cities of the region, later a Roman centre of learning where the young Octavian, the future Augustus, studied. Its ruins, the restored façade of a monument, the Byzantine monastery of St Mary and a museum stand on a hill among olive trees. Allow two hours. It makes a good stop on the road south, combined with Berat or Vlorë.
