About St Stephen’s Cathedral, Shkodër

St Stephen’s Cathedral, the Kisha e Madhe or Great Church, is the Catholic cathedral of Shkodër, the heart of Catholic Albania. It was damaged by Montenegrin artillery during the siege of 1912–13, closed in 1967 when the communist regime banned religion and used as a sports hall, and reopened in 1990, an event that marked the return of religious freedom. Its interior is calm and bright. Visit during a service to hear the choir; dress modestly.
