The back story

About Cinema in Tirana: the back story

Tirana had nine cinemas until the late 1990s (OBCT). Today the city’s film life is smaller but lively: a cinema on the Boulevard, two multiplexes, the Agimi Art Center, and a September film festival.

A new start

Until the late 1990s Tirana had nine cinemas, and many of the old neighbourhood screens have since closed. One of them, the Kinema Agimi by the Lana River, has been reborn as the Agimi Art Center, run by the city’s Creative Industries Agency, which shows films alongside other cultural events (OBCT, 2025).

The Tirana International Film Festival

Founded in 2003, the Tirana International Film Festival is the city’s big film week. Its 24th edition ran from 21 to 27 September 2026, with screenings at the Millennium Cinema, the Agimi Art Center, Kino Piramida, the Maks Velo cinema and Vila 31, and the awards ceremony at the Millennium (tiranafilmfest.org).

Every September the Tirana International Film Festival fills the city’s screens.

Our tips

For the latest international releases, choose the Millennium on the Boulevard in the centre, or Cineplexx at the Tirana East Gate and QTU shopping centres on the edge of the city, each a short taxi ride away.
